PasturePuff FAQ

General Information

  • PasturePuff mattresses are premium, portable and waterproof memory foam beds designed for horses, livestock, working dogs, household pets, and veterinary use. They are designed to be used indoors or outdoors and in all weather conditions.

PasturePuff is available in two fabric options — Standard and Premium — allowing owners and professionals to choose the level of durability and longevity that best fits their animals and environment.

Constructed with X-Pac® fabric from Dimension-Polyant — a fabric trusted in high-performance sailing and outdoor gear — PasturePuff is engineered to endure tough environments while delivering superior support, durability, and easy cleaning. Wherever your animals need comfort, PasturePuff provides a lasting sanctuary.

    • Standard Fabric: Rip-resistant, waterproof, and exceptionally durable — ideal for most dogs and shod horses, comfortably withstanding normal pawing and resting, and all weather conditions. Best for run-in sheds, stalls or loose boxes with attached turnouts. Can be punctured by sharp rocks, sharp-edged hooves, or aggressive chewing. Comes with bonding repair tape for accidental punctures.

    • Premium Fabric: Rip-proof and waterproof, a category breakthrough — the first animal bed fabric engineered to be truly rip-proof, not merely rip-resistant, and guaranteed not to be punctured, cut, or torn. Engineered for maximum longevity and peace of mind. Excellent in all weather conditions, best for aggressive chewers, long-term equine use, animals with sharp unshod hooves and animals that apply sustained pressure in stalls or loose boxes without attached runs.

  • PasturePuff combines therapeutic design with luxury craftsmanship in a way nothing else does:

    • Developed for Horses First — unlike ordinary pet beds, PasturePuff was created to withstand the weight, strength, and habits of horses. That means for dogs, it delivers unmatched durability and comfort, proven in the most demanding conditions.

    • True waterproofing — seam-sealed and lined with a physical barrier, never just “treated” which wears off over time

    • Orthopedic dual-density foam — consistent support that resists flattening and lumps

    • Utilizing Purpose-Made Fabric —derived from materials trusted in extreme outdoor and expedition environments, where failure is not an option; elevated further in our Premium Fabric for maximum longevity and protection

    • Sanctuary-level comfort — tough enough for horses and livestock, refined enough for beloved pets

    • Effortless care — no covers to remove, no laundering required - ever

    • Ethical, USA-based manufacturing — built with integrity at every step

  • PasturePuff mattresses are proudly made in the USA using premium materials and careful craftsmanship.

It was founded, designed and assembled in the beautiful Sonoran desert of Tucson, Arizona.

  • Both our Standard and Premium fabrics are covered by our Chew- / Paw- / Hoof-Proof Guarantee.
If your horse or dog chews or paws through the cover during normal use, we will replace it at no cost.

    Fabric guidance:

    • Standard Fabric: Rip-resistant, waterproof, and exceptionally durable — ideal for most dogs and shod horses, comfortably withstanding normal pawing and resting, and all weather conditions. Best for run-in sheds, stalls or loose boxes with attached turnouts. Can be punctured by sharp rocks, sharp-edged hooves, or aggressive chewing. Comes with bonding repair tape for accidental punctures.

    • Premium Fabric Rip-proof and waterproof, a category breakthrough — the first animal bed fabric engineered to be truly rip-proof, not merely rip-resistant, and guaranteed not to be punctured, cut, or torn. Engineered for maximum longevity and peace of mind. Excellent in all weather conditions, best for aggressive chewers, long-term equine use, animals with sharp unshod hooves and animals that apply sustained pressure in stalls or loose boxes without attached runs.

This guarantee reflects our confidence in both fabric options — allowing you to choose the level of durability and longevity that best fits your animal, environment, and expectations.

The guarantee applies when the fabric selected was appropriate for the animal’s known behavior and environment at the time of purchase. It covers one (1) chew or paw-through incident per household.

If damage to a Standard Fabric cover indicates aggressive chewing or high-risk use, we will apply your replacement toward a Premium Fabric upgrade, with the customer responsible only for the price difference between fabrics.

This approach allows us to stand behind our products while ensuring the right long-term solution for your animal.

    2-Year Craftsmanship Warranty
We stand behind the quality of our materials and construction. If your PasturePuff cover fails due to a workmanship or material defect within two years of purchase, we’ll replace it free of charge.

    10-Year Foam Integrity Warranty
Our orthopedic dual-density foam is engineered for long-lasting support. We guarantee that it will not compress more than ¼ inch (6 mm) under normal use for ten years from the date of purchase. If the foam fails to meet this standard, we’ll replace it.

    What’s Covered vs. Not Covered

    ✔ Covered:

    • Stitching, seams, or zipper failures due to workmanship

    • Waterproof barrier failure under normal use

    • First instance of chew or paw damage through the cover when fabric selection was appropriate

    ✘ Not Covered:

    • Multiple chew/paw incidents — We’ll cover the first one at no cost, but ongoing or repeated chewing will fall outside the guarantee. Please invest in the Premium fabric if chewing is a concern.

    • Damage resulting from known aggressive chewing when Standard Fabric was selected.

    • Damage from misuse, modification or alteration.

    • Normal wear and tear such as scuffing or surface abrasions.

    For Accidental Cuts (Standard Fabric):
Sharp objects such as sharp rocks, barefoot, unshod hooves and cutting tools can puncture the bedding surface of the Standard fabric. Each Standard fabric PasturePuff comes with repair tape so you can quickly seal small cuts yourself. These types of incidents are not covered under warranty, but the repair is simple and maintains full waterproof performance. If punctures or accidental rips are a concern, please invest in the Premium fabric.

Cleaning, Care & Durability

  • PasturePuff mattresses are built for in-place cleaning. Simply wipe down, rinse or hose off or sweep as needed. The cover is never removed, so care is quick, simple, and reliable.

  • Choosing the Right Fabric Matters
PasturePuff offers two exceptional fabric options, each engineered for different needs. Both are suitable for indoor/outdoor use and all weather conditions. The difference is in the durability and expected longevity.

    • Standard Fabric is ideal for animals without known destructive behavior, for stalls or loose boxes with attached turnouts or run-in sheds when used indoors.

    • Premium Fabric is designed for aggressive chewers, sharp or unshod hooves, and situations involving sustained pressure or higher wear, such as use in stalls or loose boxes with no attached turnout.

Premium fabric will last years longer than the standard fabric, especially when protected from UV exposure.

If your horse, dog or other pet has a history of chewing or damaging “tough” bedding, Premium Fabric is strongly recommended and may be required for warranty replacement.

Selecting the right fabric from the start ensures the best long-term experience—for both you and your animal.

  • No. The XPac® surface retains traction even in wet conditions, providing secure footing for horses, dogs, and livestock. Whether standing, shifting, or lying down, they can move with confidence and stability.

  • Yes — PasturePuff is designed for both indoor and outdoor use. The waterproof fabric and seamless construction make it suitable in barns, run-ins, trailers, and outdoor kennels. For outdoor-only use, the Premium Fabric offers enhanced UV resistance and durability compared to standard fabric.

As with all premium materials, continuous, unprotected exposure to direct sunlight will shorten the lifespan compared to use indoors or in shaded environments. In real-world testing under the intense Arizona sun and weather (some of the harshest in the world), we’ve found that outdoor-only use of the standard fabric typically delivers approximately 2.5–3 years of service, with a years longer lifespan when used indoors or protected from extreme UV exposure.

  • PasturePuff mattresses and dog beds are fully waterproof, not water-resistant.

    Each mattress is engineered with:

    • A heavy-duty laminated waterproof barrier that maintains its integrity over time

    • A locking, double-layered YKK® zipper with a protective storm flap to guard against leaks

    • Seam-sealed construction at every join

Even after years of heavy use, the waterproof barrier and sealed zipper system are designed to prevent moisture from reaching the foam core.

  • Our Standard Fabric is designed for most dogs and horses, and stands up exceptionally well to everyday pawing, standing, nesting, and resting. For most animals, it performs beautifully over years of regular use. In the event of an accidental puncture, repair bonding tape is included to allow for quick, on-the-spot repairs and continued use.

For animals that are especially hard on their bedding, we offer our Premium Fabric, which is engineered for maximum longevity. It is guaranteed not to be punctured, cut, or torn by horses or dogs, and has proven itself against sustained chewing, digging, unshod, bare or sharp hooves, and high-drive working dogs in demanding conditions.

And we stand behind both options.

Every PasturePuff includes our Chew- / Paw- / Hoof-Proof Guarantee — if your horse or dog damages the cover under normal use, we’ll replace it at no cost.

Luxury isn’t just about comfort it’s about confidence that your investment is protected.

How long does the foam last?
PasturePuff uses dual-density orthopedic memory foam rated to maintain its integrity for a decade. Unlike cheaper options that flatten or lump, our foam resists sagging and keeps its supportive shape year after year.

For details on our Warranty, see our Special Warranty section below.

  • It’s no problem. The fully waterproof surface:

    • Prevents any liquid absorption into the foam core

    • Allows for effortless cleanup with a broom, hose, or even a blower

    • Dries quickly without becoming heavy, soggy, or odorous

PasturePuff is designed to remain fresh and functional even in high-use environments.

  • No. The seam-sealed waterproof barrier, moisture wicking and non-absorbing material keep odors from penetrating the mattress. PasturePuff stays clean and fresh with minimal effort.

Unlike other fabric options, or even mattress systems which can absorb urine and other odors which either cannot be cleaned or simply don’t wash out, you can always be sure your PasturePuff will remain odor-free.

Dog Owners & Dog Facilities

  • Yes. PasturePuff is well-suited for companion dogs, working dogs, and active dogs who need reliable orthopedic support combined with exceptional durability.

Unlike conventional dog beds, PasturePuff is designed to hold up to daily use, movement, moisture, and repeated cleaning without losing structure or comfort. Its waterproof construction, stable surface, technical fabrics engineered for strength and longevity, and long-lasting foam make it appropriate for home use, kennels, travel, and demanding environments where typical dog beds break down quickly.

  • Yes. PasturePuff mattresses are designed with durability in mind, and both fabric options are covered by our Chew- / Paw- / Hoof-Proof protection when used appropriately.

For dogs with a known history of aggressive chewing or destructive behavior, we strongly recommend selecting the Premium Fabric. Premium Fabric is engineered to be rip-proof, not just rip-resistant, and is designed to withstand sustained chewing, higher wear, and long-term use in demanding environments. In some cases, Premium Fabric may be required to qualify for warranty replacement.

Selecting the right fabric from the start helps ensure the best longevity and experience for both you and your dog.

  • Yes. PasturePuff is well-suited for outdoor travel and adventure with dogs, including hiking trips, camping, boating, RV use, and extended travel.

The mattress provides a stable, non-absorbent, waterproof resting surface that resists moisture, dirt, sand, and odors. Unlike traditional dog beds that become heavy or waterlogged outdoors, PasturePuff can be easily wiped down or rinsed off and used again immediately.

Because the mattress is fully sealed and waterproof, it will float if dropped into water, making it especially practical for use on boats, docks, and near shorelines. Its durable construction and technical fabrics are designed to hold up in changing environments while still providing reliable orthopedic support for rest and recovery.

  • Yes. PasturePuff works well in boarding kennels and adoption facilities because it offers a comfortable, waterproof, and easily disinfected sleeping surface that holds up to repeated use. Unlike traditional beds or towels that need laundering or absorb odor and moisture, PasturePuff stays clean and durable with minimal maintenance.

  • Yes. PasturePuff is well-suited for whelping boxes where traction, cleanliness, and safety are important. The non-skid, waterproof, and easily disinfected surface provides a stable environment for both dams and puppies, and unlike towels or loose bedding, it won’t bunch, absorb fluids, or create ingestible materials.

  • Yes. Many products marketed as “indestructible” rely on rip-resistant fabrics and are designed to perform well for the majority of dogs, knowing that only a small percentage exhibit truly aggressive or sustained destructive behavior.

At PasturePuff, we’ve tested both our Standard and Premium Fabrics with high-drive working dogs, including German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, and other powerful chewers. In testing, these dogs were unable to tear the Standard Fabric, but some were able to puncture it under sustained, aggressive chewing. The same dogs were unable to puncture the Premium Fabric.

This real-world testing is why we recommend Premium Fabric for aggressive chewers and why we confidently stand behind it with our Chew- / Paw- / Hoof-Proof protection when used as intended. Selecting the right fabric from the start ensures the best long-term performance and peace of mind.

  • We carry standard wire crate sizes XS through 3XL

Horse Owners & Stable Use

  • Yes. PasturePuff can be used as an alternative to traditional bedding in a wide range of situations where comfort, cleanliness, or environmental control is important.

It is particularly well suited for:

    • Horses with respiratory sensitivities, including asthma or allergies, where dust-free environments are critical

    • Horses with allergic reactions to traditional bedding, such as straw, shavings, or pellets

    • Horses prone to colic from ingesting bedding, offering a non-ingestible resting surface

    • Horses on stall rest, where consistent cushioning and easy sanitation are essential

    • Horses requiring a more sterile or controlled environment, including veterinary, rehabilitation, or isolation settings

    • Laminitic or sore-footed horses, where even pressure distribution and orthopedic support help reduce standing fatigue

    • Senior horses who benefit from joint-friendly support and easier rising

    • Post-procedure or recovering horses, where cleanliness, stability, and comfort matter most

PasturePuff does not replace appropriate management, turnout, or veterinary care, but it provides a clean, supportive, and low-maintenance foundation that can significantly reduce the challenges associated with traditional bedding.

  • Horses naturally benefit from having options in their environment. Research shows that standing on compliant or unstable surfaces increases the amount of postural control effort a horse uses, because the body must make more continuous balance corrections. When horses are given access to both firm, stable footing and softer, cushioned surfaces, many choose to use a combination, sometimes standing with only part of their body on the mattress and part on solid ground. This behavior suggests horses self-select the surface that best meets their needs in the moment, rather than preferring only one type of surface. Providing both firm and soft areas allows horses to choose what feels best for them throughout the day, rather than being forced to stand on a single surface all the time.

  • Yes. PasturePuff was originally designed for horses with laminitis, where stable, cushioned footing is essential. Its therapeutic support also benefits animals with arthritis, ringbone, joint soreness, or chronic pain by reducing stress on hooves, legs, and joints.

  • Yes. PasturePuff is suitable for foaling stalls because it offers a stable, non-skid, waterproof surface that can be easily cleaned and disinfected. It helps provide a cushioned and hygienic environment for mares and foals without the drawbacks of loose bedding.

We recommend the Large Horse / Draft size to accommodate your mare and foal.

  • Traditional rubber stall mats are designed primarily for durability and flooring protection, not orthopedic comfort. Most are approximately ½" thick rubber, while some alternatives use EVA foam or thin “bubble” designs encased in rubber. These materials provide limited pressure relief and minimal cushioning for standing or rest.

PasturePuff was developed specifically to address comfort and pressure distribution, not just coverage.

Through extensive testing of mattress thicknesses ranging from 2" to 6" and multiple foam densities, we found that horses consistently preferred our 4" dual-density orthopedic foam configuration for both standing and sleeping. This design offers meaningful pressure-point relief and support that thin rubber or EVA-based mats cannot provide.

Horses place significant weight on joints and soft tissue while standing and lying down. Just as people and dogs require more than a thin layer of dense material for true orthopedic support, horses benefit from substantial, purpose-engineered cushioning — not simply a resilient surface.

PasturePuff is not a flooring mat; it is an orthopedic mattress system designed for comfort, recovery, and long-term wellbeing.

  • You don’t need a permanent stall system to give your horse the best - but PasturePuff is a beautiful compliment if one is already in place!

Permanent stall systems offer a strong, fixed foundation for daily barn life. But PasturePuff brings something they can’t: therapeutic, orthopedic comfort with the freedom to go wherever your horse goes.

    • Stand-Alone Comfort – A PasturePuff can serve as your horse’s primary resting surface, even without a permanent stall base — perfect for turnout pens, temporary barns, or travel.

    • Elevate Existing Stalls – For barns with permanent stalls, simply place a PasturePuff on top to create a cushioned retreat without altering your current setup.

    • Portable Luxury – PasturePuff travels easily — from stalls to trailers, turnout pens, or showgrounds — so your horse rests on the same premium surface everywhere.

    • Focused Recovery – Especially valuable for horses on stall rest or recovering from injury, ensuring consistent orthopedic support that protects joints and encourages deep, restorative rest.

    • Effortless Care – Unlike fixed systems, PasturePuff requires no special maintenance and cleans in seconds with a simple sweep or hose-off - and doesn’t hold onto odors!

    • Consistent surface - Unlike some permanent installations that can harden, compress, or wear unevenly over time, PasturePuff maintains a uniform, supportive surface across the entire mattress.

Permanent installations offer structure; PasturePuff provides the sanctuary.

Whether enhancing a luxury barn or creating a comfortable space anywhere, PasturePuff ensures your horse rests on the best possible foundation — no construction required.

  • The 4" thickness reflects extensive real-world testing across multiple foam densities and mattress heights. Through this process, we found that 4" of dual-density orthopedic foam consistently provided the best balance of comfort, support, and stability for horses during both standing and rest.

Thinner options, such as 2", did not provide sufficient pressure-point relief or joint support under sustained weight. Thicker configurations, such as 6", introduced excess softness that reduced stability and made movement less natural. The 4" configuration delivered the most consistent preference across horses, supporting comfort without compromising balance or footing.

  • Absolutely! Our Breakeven Calculators let you see how quickly a PasturePuff can pay for itself compared to traditional bedding or pads.

Performance Horse Calculator– Shows the savings when you replace shavings, rice hulls, or straw with a PasturePuff, plus how much less time you’ll spend cleaning stalls each day.

These tools highlight not just the obvious costs, but also the hidden ones — like the hours spent hauling and spreading bedding, the hassle of constant re-ordering, the valuable barn space eaten up by storing bulky bags and bales of bedding, and the waste that piles up from frequent replacements.

By swapping out the endless cycle of bedding for a single, long-lasting PasturePuff, you give your horses a cushioned, orthopedic stall that’s easy to keep spotless — and you reclaim both time and space, while enjoying lasting savings.

  • Large Horse/Draft Size — Ideal for horses 15.1 hands and larger, or mares & foals in foaling stalls

Average Horse/Pony Size — Ideal for horses 15 hands and smaller and ponies such as Shetland

Mini Size — Perfect for miniature horses

Please see the "Horse Stall Size Guide” below for a visual example of how these fit within a standard 12’ x 12’ stall.

  • Yes. PasturePuff mattresses are tested with both barefoot and shod horses.

For best results, horses should have properly fitted shoes with no excessively protruding nails, which is standard best practice regardless of flooring or bedding. Under normal conditions, both barefoot and shod horses use PasturePuff comfortably and safely.

Please review the section for fabric recommendations to ensure you make the best choice for your horse.

If your horse has a history of chewing or damaging “tough” bedding, Premium Fabric is strongly recommended and may be required for warranty replacement.

Selecting the right fabric from the start ensures the best long-term experience—for both you and your horse.

  • Patience is key! Many animals will adopt it naturally once they associate it with comfort. Some horses will take to it right away, and others might take days or even weeks.

Here’s a few tips that have resulted in successful mattress use to try:

    • Walk horses over it like a tarp or bridge.

    • Place it where they eat or sleep.

    • Scatter familiar bedding (like shavings) on top initially, then gradually remove. This typically encourages horses to paw and roll on it.

    • Close the horse in a stall or loose box overnight and restrict access to any attached turnout.

  • No. PasturePuff lets animals choose when to stand or rest. The premium memory foam won’t compress or get lumpy, so support stays consistent for years.

We’ve found that sometimes horses prefer to stand on firm ground, and sometimes on the mattress. The PasturePuff allows the horse to make the decision based on how they are feeling in the moment without the need of owner intervention or supervision.

  • PasturePuff mattresses are waterproof and designed to be easily rinsed and maintained, but urine management depends on the horse’s housing setup. Horses naturally prefer to urinate in areas that absorb moisture and reduce splashing, so the goal is to work with that instinct whenever possible.

    • Option 1: Enclosed stall with space for limited bedding
If the mattress does not cover the entire stall, place a small, defined pile of shavings in an uncovered area. Most horses will naturally choose this softer, absorbent spot for urination, keeping the mattress cleaner while still benefiting from full-time comfort and support.

    • Option 2: Enclosed stall with no alternative bedding
In situations where no additional bedding can be used, some horses will urinate wherever is most convenient. In these cases, we recommend regular rinsing of the mattress or affected area as part of daily stall care. Because PasturePuff is fully waterproof, it can be quickly rinsed and returned to service without absorbing moisture or odors.

    • Option 3: Stall with an attached run
For horses with access to a run, we recommend no additional bedding inside the stall. Some horses may initially urinate on the mattress; if this occurs, simply rinse it each time. Within a few days, most horses will naturally begin urinating in the run — especially if the run includes a soft, inviting surface such as sand or a small pile of shavings that minimizes splashing.

Horse Stall Size Guide

The visual shown here is how much space the mattress sizes take up in a standard 12’ x 12’ stall. Based on observation, horses prefer having a choice between standing on the mattress or on a hard/stable surface depending on how they feel, as opposed to being forced to stand on one or the other.

Sometimes horses prefer standing with all four feet on or off the mattress, and sometimes they choose to stand with only two (typically front) on the mattress.

  • Large Horse/Draft Size — (120" x 75" x 4") | 48lbs | Ideal for horses 15.1 hands and up

  • Average Horse/Pony Size — (80" x 75" x 4") | 32lbs | Ideal for horses 15 hands and smaller

  • Mini Size — (75" x 40" x 4") | 16lbs | Perfect for miniature horses, goats, sheep, or other small livestock

Veterinary, Breeding & Kennel Use

  • After colic surgery, when keeping the surgical site clean and free of dust from shavings or straw

For horses in ICU settings that cannot be kept on shavings or straw, such as horses with colic, impactions or the tendency to eat bedding

  • PasturePuff is compatible with common veterinary-safe disinfectants, making it suitable for clinical and kennel environments. You can disinfect thoroughly without compromising the integrity of the fabric or seams.

  • Large Animal In-Clinic or Hospital Use - the Average Horse/Pony size is idea for equine patients in ICU stalls.

The Mini size is perfect for veterinary technicians and hospital staff to have on hand for comfort while sitting with foals or when needing to sit with patients. It’s extremely comfortable and portable.

Large Animal Field Use - the Mini is portable and excellent for in the field procedures when a horse or foal needs to be laid down, such as castration.

Small Animal Hospital Use - we carry standard-sized mats made to fit most ICU kennels and runs. Please contact us if your sizes aren’t listed, or if you’re in need of custom sizes.

  • We recommend sticking with black as it performs best after repeated disinfection. Other colors may discolor from the chemicals used in the cleaning protocols.

  • Absolutely! Our ICU & Kennel Calculator lets you see how quickly a PasturePuff can pay for itself compared to vinyl pads typically used in veterinary settings.

Other Farm Animal & Livestock Use

  • Yes. PasturePuff is used in veterinary and specialty care settings for animals such as pigs, and may be suitable for small-scale or boutique livestock operations where hygiene, traction, and easy cleaning are priorities. It can help provide supportive and sanitary surfaces in recovery, temporary housing, or clinical environments.

For animals with sharp, split hooves, we recommend investing in the Premium fabric to avoid punctures from pointed hooves.

  • PasturePuff can be suitable for small-scale or boutique cattle operations, particularly in recovery, veterinary, calving, or temporary housing environments where comfort, hygiene, and ease of cleaning are priorities.

PasturePuff is not designed to replace permanent flooring systems used in large commercial or industrial dairy operations. Instead, it offers a portable, waterproof, orthopedic resting surface for situations where individual animal care, flexibility, and cleanliness matter most.

  • Yes. PasturePuff can be used for a variety of small-to-medium farm animals, including sheep, llamas, and alpacas, particularly in settings where comfort, hygiene, and easy cleaning are important.

PasturePuff mattresses are already in use by a llama owner, and they work well in barns, shelters, veterinary settings, and recovery environments where animals benefit from a stable, cushioned, waterproof surface. As with all uses, selecting the appropriate size and fabric helps ensure the best fit and longevity.
